Zhongshan has no single central industrial district: lighting is in Guzhen, locks in Xiaolan, appliances in Nantou and Dongfeng, and clothing in Shaxi. Pick the town first, then the factory.
Five Towns, Four Trades
Zhongshan's 2025 GDP was RMB 426.056 billion, with imports and exports of RMB 287.21 billion (exports RMB 251.56 billion); electromechanical products made up 79.8% of exports. Home appliances and lighting are the two signature industries: in 2024 appliances accounted for 26.2% of the city's exports and lighting for 7%.
| Town | Main industry | 2025 GDP | Scale | What to look at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guzhen | Lighting | RMB 17.78 billion | A lighting cluster covering 11 towns and sub-districts in three neighbouring cities, with annual output value above RMB 100 billion; 45,699 lighting business entities | Decorative lighting, commercial lighting, smart lighting, drivers and light sources |
| Xiaolan | Hardware and locks | RMB 60.995 billion | Lock output value above RMB 10 billion; more than 300 lock factories and more than 5,300 supporting suppliers | Mechanical locks, smart locks, lock cylinders, door hardware |
| Nantou | Home appliances | RMB 21.373 billion | Appliances make up more than 70% of the town's industry, across 165 categories | Air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions, small appliances |
| Dongfeng | Small appliances | RMB 19.895 billion | About 9,500 appliance-related companies, more than 80% of the town's economy | Electric heating, kitchen and environmental small appliances |
| Shaxi | Casual clothing | RMB 11.82 billion | 15,000 clothing-related entities and 100,000 workers | Knitwear, T-shirts, denim, fabrics and trims |
Of the four trades, lighting has the longest chain: market buildings, components, and testing and certification all sit inside the single town of Guzhen.
Guzhen: Lighting in Three Layers
The market layer. Xingguang Alliance covers nearly 360,000 square metres and houses nearly 700 manufacturer flagship stores; Huayi Plaza, Lihe Plaza and the Lighting Building are also in the town centre. Samples, price comparisons and catalogues are all handled here.
The factory layer. Guzhen administers 12 administrative villages and 1 community, and most factories sit in village industrial zones. A market stall is not a factory — ask first which village the production address is in.
The supporting layer. Light sources, drivers, hardware, acrylic, packaging and moulds are all in the town, and so are testing and certification: the National Lighting Quality Inspection and Testing Centre (Zhongshan) runs a “Guzhen Service Station”, and in August 2026 a town-level quality service centre opened to handle CCC, CE and UL liaison.
Categories: decorative art lighting, residential lighting, commercial lighting, smart lighting. The key point: whether the body, the light source and the driver are the same model under the same certificate — these three are the items most often quoted separately.
Xiaolan, Nantou and Dongfeng: Locks and Appliances
Xiaolan is locks. Gate locks, pin tumbler locks, lever handle locks, lock cylinders and smart locks (hotel locks, fingerprint locks) are all made here. Huafeng Lock runs mould making, stamping, die casting and testing under one roof, and 70% of its market is in North America. Xiaolan has been a “China Lock Export Base” since 2004; in 2024 its smart lock cluster was named a national-level specialised industrial cluster for small and medium-sized enterprises, with more than 200 smart lock companies and output expected to pass 8 million sets that year. More than 10,000 companies in Zhongshan work in the hardware and locks chain, and 2023 export value exceeded RMB 18 billion.
Nantou is major appliances. Air conditioners, televisions and refrigerators dominate, and small appliance categories are complete as well, 165 in total; the town government calls it the only town in China with complete supply chains for both white goods and black goods. The town's 2025 imports and exports reached RMB 51 billion.
Dongfeng is small appliances. About 9,500 appliance-related companies; small appliances and supporting suppliers account for more than 80% of the town's economy, and exports go to more than 110 countries and regions.
How to choose: for complete units with full certification, go to Nantou; for small appliances across many SKUs, go to Dongfeng; for locks and door hardware, go to Xiaolan. Xiaolan also has LED packaging and office furniture, which fall outside a locks purchase and can be skipped.
Before Ordering: Write These into the PI
Lighting
- Certification by destination country: EU CE (LVD, EMC, RoHS, ErP) plus the energy label; US UL/ETL (UL 1598, UL 153); add FCC for models with a wireless module.
- Voltage, frequency and plug: EU 230V/50Hz, US 120V/60Hz, UK BS 1363. A wrong plug means rework or a cable change, and the sailing date is missed.
- Certification covers the body, the driver and the light source, and the certificate model matches the ordered model.
- Whether the light source and the driver are included, and whether the packaging passes a drop test — lighting is fragile, so put the packaging into the contract.
Locks
- State the material: die-cast zinc alloy, stainless steel or brass; for surface finish, state the salt spray hours.
- Keying: keyway, mutual opening rate, whether a master key is required, and how many keys come with each lock.
- Door thickness, backset, hole dimensions and lock edge distance — these decide whether the lock fits. Do not place a large order before the sample is confirmed.
- Certification: EU EN 1303 (lock cylinders) and EN 12209 (mechanical locks); US ANSI/BHMA; UL 10C for fire door locks; smart locks with wireless need CE RED or FCC, and lithium batteries need UN38.3.
Appliances
- Certification: CE (LVD, EMC, ErP, RoHS), UL/ETL, FCC; energy efficiency by destination country (EU energy label, US DOE/Energy Star).
- For refrigeration, confirm the refrigerant (R290, R32) and the destination country's F-gas rules.
- The certificate model, the nameplate model and the ordered model must match. Small appliances carry many SKUs, and the easiest trap is “one certificate covers one model only”.
One rule for all three: write the production address into the contract, and make it match the certificate holder and the inspection address. Zhongshan has plenty of stalls and traders, so check on the spot when the three do not agree.
Why Supporting Suppliers Are Complete, and What That Does Not Mean
The base is complete because supporting plants and finished-goods plants are in the same town.
- Guzhen: light sources, drivers, hardware, packaging and testing are all inside the town.
- Xiaolan: more than 5,300 lock supporting suppliers; moulds, die casting, electroplating, lock cylinders, panels and handles sit on one chain.
- Nantou and Dongfeng: Nantou has 5,800 appliance and supporting companies, with injection moulding, sheet metal, control boards and packaging inside the town; Dongfeng has about 9,500, with heating elements, thermostats and plastic parts inside the town.
- Shaxi: the fabric and trim supply chain of the western Pearl River Estuary, and Zhongshan's largest wholesale market for clothing and cloth.
The result is that sampling and mould modification happen in the same town, with no need to drag a mould to another city. But a complete base only means changes are easy; it does not mean short lead times, and it does not mean low prices — lead time depends on the production schedule, and cost depends on materials and certification. Those two need a production schedule and a bill of materials, which beat verbal assurances.
Where Zhongshan Is and How to Get In
Zhongshan sits on the western bank of the Pearl River Estuary: Nansha in Guangzhou to the north, Jiangmen to the west, Zhuhai to the south, and Shenzhen across the estuary to the east. There is no civil airport. Since the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link opened on 30 June 2024, the trip from Shenzhen to Zhongshan has been cut from 2 hours to half an hour.
| From | Route | Arrive at |
|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen Bao'an Airport | Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link airport express, 50 minutes or less one way, 72 departures a day | Zhongshan city centre (Zhongshan Expo Center) |
| Guangzhou Baiyun Airport | Metro to Guangzhou South Station, then the Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity railway | Zhongshan Station, Zhongshan North Station |
| Guangzhou South Station | Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity railway, about half an hour | Zhongshan Station, Zhongshan North Station |
| Hong Kong Airport | Ferry to Zhongshan Passenger Port (Ma'an Island) in 50 minutes; 65 minutes to China Hong Kong City | Cuiheng New Area |
For the towns, buy a ticket to the town's own intercity station: Xiaolan Station, Nantou Station and Guzhen Station (on the Jiangmen branch line). The five towns are 20–40 minutes apart by road; Shaxi is close to Zhongshan Station, and the town government states 15 minutes to Zhongshan North Station.
How cargo gets out: all five of Zhongshan's foreign-trade container terminals connect to Yantian and Shekou in Shenzhen through the “combined port” arrangement, with a single customs declaration, a single inspection and a single release. Whether a quote reads “FOB Zhongshan” or “FOB Yantian/Shekou” depends on where the freight forwarder takes over the cargo — write the port of loading and the handover point into the PI.
