Reading China–Africa Trade Data: A Buyer's Guide
Official Chinese trade figures on Africa are widely quoted and just as widely misread. For importers and wholesalers, the value of these numbers depends entirely on knowing which statistical basis produced them. This guide walks through what the customs-level data actually establishes, and where it stops.
What the official numbers show
China's exports to Africa reached USD 225.031 billion in full-year 2025, up 25.8% year on year. Over the same period, total China–Africa trade was USD 348.052 billion, up 17.7%, while China's imports from Africa were USD 123.021 billion, up 5.4%. The export growth rate was noticeably higher than China's overall foreign trade growth in the same period.
For a more recent reading: in Q1 2026, China's exports to Africa were USD 60.661 billion, up 32.1% year on year, with two-way trade at USD 92.255 billion, up 26.8%.
Keep the two periods separate. Full-year 2025 and Q1 2026 are different statistical windows and should never be merged into a single figure.
The one clean regional comparison
The State Council Information Office (SCIO) published a same-basis regional comparison for full-year 2025: China's two-way trade with Africa was RMB 2.49 trillion, up 18.4%, against RMB 3.93 trillion with Latin America, up 6.5%. ASEAN stood at RMB 7.55 trillion. Calculated from those two official figures, Africa's growth rate was roughly 2.8 times Latin America's — a calculation made from official numbers, not an official statement.
Note plainly: that same sentence did not break out the Middle East. No official, same-basis Africa-versus-Middle-East comparison can be made from this release.
Machinery and electrical products
In the same SCIO context, China's exports of machinery and electrical products to Africa came to RMB 534.11 billion in the first half of 2026, up 28.8% year on year. The release also noted that photovoltaic products, power transmission and transformation equipment, general machinery, and auto parts all maintained sound growth in exports to Africa.
Yiwu's own figures
For small-commodity and daily-goods buying, Yiwu's numbers are the relevant ones.
- Full-year 2025: Yiwu's two-way trade with Africa was RMB 150.70 billion, up 23.4%. Over the same period, Yiwu's trade with Latin America was RMB 127.43 billion, up 14.1%, and with ASEAN RMB 93.95 billion, up 46.7%.
- Q1 2026: RMB 41.0 billion, up 47.3%; Yiwu's imports from Africa grew 92.6% over the same period.
- First half of 2026: RMB 102.64 billion, up 42.7%. The official report described strong demand in the African market for Yiwu's product categories.
- First three quarters of 2025: RMB 111.2 billion, up 22.3%.
Yiwu's growth has run ahead of the national figures: 42.7% in H1 2026 against 32.1% for national exports to Africa in Q1 2026, and 23.4% for full-year 2025 against 25.8% nationally in the same window.
Category-level data that exists
On the Yiwu basis for full-year 2025, home appliances exports were RMB 20.45 billion, up 23.6%, and auto parts exports were RMB 118.1 billion, up 59.1%. Official reporting on Yiwu's Africa trade also named machinery and equipment and hardware/tools as products in strong demand.
Three reading traps
Trap 1 — Never mix the two bases
The national basis includes energy and bulk commodities. The Yiwu/Jinhua basis is small commodities and daily consumer goods. These are different baskets measured on different scales. They must never be mixed or averaged.
Trap 2 — One country is not the continent
Country-level performance varies widely. Read country figures where they exist and do not generalise from a regional total. A single country's decline in one year and recovery in the next does not describe the continent.
Trap 3 — Official statistics stop at a certain category depth
Chinese official statistics carry no category breakdown for home storage and organisation. No growth rate, market size or trend figure for storage/organisation, or for "home daily goods", can be drawn from them. Any such number must be confirmed item by item.
What this means for your sourcing
- Category claims are capped. Only home appliances, hardware/tools, labour-intensive products, and machinery & electrical products carry official category-level support.
- African buyers travel on business visas. African countries appear on neither the 30-day visa-free list nor the 240-hour transit visa-free list, so neither route applies. The route is open — it requires a visa.
- The 30-day visa-free arrangement covers 11 countries: 9 under unilateral visa-free treatment (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain; Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay) and 2 under mutual visa-exemption agreements (UAE, Qatar). Conditions: ordinary passport, business, tourism, family visit, exchange visit, or transit not exceeding 30 days. Valid until 2026-12-31.
- Visa-free entry does not require an invitation letter.
- Verify your supplier yourself. China's enterprise credit information publicity system and customs credit-rating disclosures let buyers check registration, administrative penalties and AEO status.
- Know your dispute route. The 12315 consumer complaint channel is built for consumer purchases and may not accept resale/B2B disputes; CCPIT mediation handles commercial disputes across trade, transport and logistics, and accepts a single party's application.
- Freight paperwork matters. Under China's international maritime regulations, NVOCC operators must file with transport authorities and publish filed rates; written agreement rates must appear on the bill of lading.
