First Business Trip to China: Yiwu Buyer Guide
Planning a first sourcing trip to China raises practical questions: what will it cost, how will I communicate, and how do I prepare for factory and showroom visits? This guide covers those three areas for B2B importers, wholesalers and retailers heading to Yiwu — the sourcing hub where our team is based and where our partner-factory network operates.
Trip Costs: What to Budget For
We do not publish figures for trip costs. A sourcing trip budget varies from person to person and depends heavily on the market you are visiting, the length of your stay and your own travel preferences. Any single number would be misleading, so we deliberately avoid quoting one.
What we can do is help you identify the cost items to plan for, so nothing catches you by surprise:
- Flights — international airfare to and from China, plus any domestic connection to reach Yiwu.
- Hotel — accommodation for the length of your stay. Hotel booking is a paid service we can arrange for visiting buyers; the fee is available on request.
- Daily spending — meals, incidentals and day-to-day expenses during your trip.
- Local transport — getting around Yiwu between your hotel, the markets, our office or warehouse, and any partner factory you visit.
If you tell us your dates and what you want to accomplish, we can help you estimate the budget for your specific trip. We will not quote a figure we cannot stand behind — we will work through the items with you.
One practical step before you book flights: you can schedule a live video call with us to see goods and packing on camera — at the market, in our warehouse or at a partner factory. Buyers send a list of the items they want to see in advance, and we prepare before the call. This lets you confirm products and the actual setting before deciding whether to travel. It is a useful way to reduce the risk of a wasted trip.
Language: Interpreting Support for Visiting Buyers
Language is one of the first concerns for any buyer visiting China, and it is a reasonable one — Yiwu's markets are busy, and not every supplier you meet will speak your language.
We can arrange an interpreter for visiting buyers. This is a paid service, and the languages are arranged as needed according to the buyer and the visit. We do not publish a fixed language list, because the arrangement depends on your requirements and availability at the time of your trip. The fee is on request — tell us your dates and the languages you need, and we will confirm what can be arranged.
An interpreter is particularly useful during factory and showroom visits, where technical questions about materials, processes and packaging come up quickly. If your visit involves product categories such as drawer storage racks with small bins or foldable detachable utility carts, being able to discuss specifications directly shortens the process considerably.
Preparing for Factory and Showroom Visits
Book Your Visit in Advance
Visits are welcome by appointment in advance. This is not a formality — it is how we make sure the right people are available and that the products or factories you want to see are ready for you.
The booking process is straightforward:
- Send us your dates in Yiwu and the products or factories you want to see.
- We reply and confirm the arrangements before you travel.
- We tell you which address to come to — our office address or our warehouse address — depending on what you want to view.
We do not provide a fixed hour-by-hour itinerary for your visit day, because that level of detail has not been confirmed on our side. What we do confirm is the substance: what you will see and where.
What Can Happen on Your Visit Day
When you visit us in Yiwu, the working agenda typically covers:
- Sourcing and matching — you describe your requirements, and we match them against partner factories in China by material, workmanship and price.
- Yiwu market sourcing — our team is based in Yiwu and buys from the local market as well as our nationwide partner-factory network.
- Quality checks as needed — our team inspects samples and production batches and provides photo or video self-check records before shipment.
- Export documents — we prepare shipping documents on FOB Yiwu terms and coordinate with the freight forwarder you appoint.
- Partner factory visits — you can visit the partner factory handling your order and appoint your own inspection company.
- Certificates — certificates are issued by the partner factories; we verify them against your target market requirements, such as CE, SABER or NOM.
If you are sourcing home goods, a visit is a good opportunity to examine construction details in person — for example, the steel tube diameter and thickness on a 12-tier drawer storage rack, or the finish on a 3-tier sink storage rack with an ABS top and PP bottom.
Commercial Terms to Know Before You Travel
A few terms are worth understanding before your visit, so discussions move faster:
- Quotations are on FOB Yiwu terms, tax excluded. This is our standard quotation basis and can be quoted directly.
- Payment is by T/T in advance.
- A sample fee is charged, and it is deducted from the order payment once the order is placed.
We are a sourcing agent and export trading company, not a factory. Our role is to match your requirements with partner factories, verify what they provide, and prepare export documents on FOB Yiwu terms. We do not provide freight forwarding services — you appoint your own forwarder, and we coordinate with them.
A Note on Verifying Suppliers
Before or during your trip, you can independently verify the corporate information of any Chinese supplier you are considering. China's official enterprise credit information disclosure system allows you to search by company name or unified social credit code to check registration, business scope, administrative licences, annual reports, administrative penalties and abnormal operating status. For export compliance records, you can also check whether a Chinese exporter holds customs AEO status — advanced certified or certified enterprise — through official customs credit disclosures.
These checks are a practical way to reduce risk when you are meeting new suppliers for the first time.
Planning Your Trip Around Your Product Interests
The most productive first trips are built around a clear product focus. If you already know which categories you want to source, tell us in advance so we can prepare samples and line up the right partner factories. Categories like flame effect humidifiers or octopus clothes drying racks can be prepared for viewing before you arrive.
We can also arrange a live video call before you book flights, so you can see goods and packing on camera first. Many buyers find this a useful first step — it lets you confirm whether a trip is worthwhile before committing to travel costs.
