Plug and Cord Checks for China-Made

The plug, the cord and the connection are treated as goods in the European Union, not as accessories you swap later. The European Commission's Low Voltage Directive (LVD, 2014/35/EU) covers electrical equipment with an input or output voltage between 50 and 1000 V alternating current and 75 and 1500 V direct current, and the Commission names cables and power supply units among the equipment covered. Its LVD working-party documents also include one titled "CE marking in cord sets". Read that as an indication only: it says nothing about the rules of your own market, and we do not extrapolate it to the Middle East, South America or Africa.

What it does say is narrow and useful. The connection side sits inside the regulated product, so a plug that does not match the destination is not a small substitution — it is a non-conforming good. Everything below follows from that one point.

What the buyer must fix in writing before production

Five items belong in the written specification, and all five must be closed before the factory starts. Leave any of them open and the factory will fill the gap with its own domestic habit, which is usually the home-market version, not the export version.

The first is the plug or connection type, described by you or your importer together with the reference standard you rely on. We do not publish a plug-type chart and we do not carry an official source for one, so the reference standard has to come from your side — that is the document your customs broker and your market surveillance authority will read.

The second is cord length and cord type, stated as a number and a designation rather than a description. The third is whether the cord set is detachable or moulded. These two are decided together, because the factory's default for one usually implies a default for the other.

The fourth is the language and content of the rating label and the manual — which language, which fields, and whether the importer's name and address appear. The fifth is whether the plug is fitted at the factory or supplied loose in the carton. Loose plugs change what your importer has to do on arrival, and that decision belongs in the same document, not in an email thread after the order.

Where the CE question actually lands

CE marking is compulsory only for most of the products covered by the New Approach Directives, and it is forbidden to affix it to other products. It is not a safety approval issued by the EU or by any other authority, and it does not indicate the origin of a product. The party responsible is the manufacturer, who carries out the conformity assessment, builds the technical file, issues the EU declaration of conformity and affixes the mark; importers and distributors carry their own obligations.

Under the LVD, the manufacturer alone is responsible for determining compliance through the conformity assessment procedure, and voluntary or other additional certificates are not a recognized means to prove compliance — they have no value in checks by market surveillance authorities or customs. A certificate bearing a CE marking is not acceptable.

For a buyer this has one practical consequence: the paper you need is issued by the manufacturer of the appliance, in its own name, and it is that document your importer will be asked for. Whether a small appliance also falls under the EU energy label or ecodesign rules has to be checked item by item against the Commission's product list — vacuum cleaners, for example, appear there under ecodesign only. We do not decide that for you.

What we do and what we do not do

We are a sourcing agent and export trading company based in Yiwu, not a factory, and we have no production line of our own. Our categories include small household electrical appliances, which we can source in China to a buyer's requirement, and we check the supplier's documents against the written specification — electrical parameters, plug and cord type, accompanying documents and labels.

We hold no certificate for any cord set or appliance and we issue no declaration of conformity; certificates belong to the manufacturer. We verify the certificates our partner factories provide as documents, and certificates and test reports are available on request — that is document checking, not certification by us.

Our pre-shipment self-check covers quantity, appearance, function, packing and shipping marks, each compared against the approved sample, and we issue a packing list. We do not issue an inspection report, and we do not certify that a cord set meets any national standard. If you need a laboratory result, that is a third-party inspection you appoint; you may name your own inspection company when you visit the partner factory handling your order.

The comparison that catches most problems

Before the goods leave, put the plug on the approved sample next to the plug in the production cartons, and put the rating label wording next to the manual, word for word. This is a document-and-sample comparison, not a laboratory test — and it is where most of the failures we see would have been caught.

Run it in this order. The plug first, because a wrong plug type is the one defect that cannot be corrected at the destination without rework. The label second, because a label in the wrong language fails at the border rather than at the socket. The manual third, because a manual that contradicts the label is the mismatch a market surveillance officer notices first. None of these three needs equipment; all three need the approved sample in hand and the specification open beside it.

The sample itself has to be the reference, which is why we keep it against the order. If the sample and the carton disagree, the carton is wrong, and the decision to ship or hold is yours — we report what the comparison shows and stop there.

Limits on our side of the transaction

We do not provide freight forwarding. We do not book or co-book space, issue transport documents, collect freight, handle customs clearance or run a consolidation warehouse; you appoint your own forwarder, and freight rates and transit times are confirmed with that forwarder, not with us. Our role in the logistics chain is limited to preparing export documents on FOB Yiwu terms and coordinating with the forwarder you name.

We also do not quote prices, costs or commission in this article, we make no lead-time promise, and we do not assist with visas or invitation letters. The warranty we state is one year against manufacturing defects under normal use, excluding consumable parts.

If you want to see the goods and the packing before committing to a trip, a live video call can be arranged in advance with your list of items, from the market, our warehouse or a partner factory. For a specification review on a small appliance order, send us the plug type, the reference standard you rely on and the label language, and we will tell you what the supplier's documents show against them.
