Planning a storage and organisation programme for Middle East markets — shoe racks, wardrobe and closet organisers, plastic drawer units, under-bed storage and tiered storage racks — means ordering for multi-person households in small urban apartments. Those two conditions, many people and little floor space, decide almost every specification question before price does. This checklist sets out what to settle with the supplier before the order is placed.

Novel Home Goods is the brand of Yiwu Ruiheart Trading Co., Ltd., a sourcing agent and export trading company based in Zhejiang, Yiwu. We are not a factory, we have no production lines of our own and we do not manufacture products; our role is to source in China according to the buyer's requirements, compare prices, inspect goods and arrange export. All quotations are issued on FOB Yiwu terms, tax excluded.

Start With the Footprint, Not the Price

Depth and width for narrow spaces

In a small apartment, the depth of a unit decides whether it can be used at all. A rack that is a few centimetres too deep will not sit beside a washing machine, inside a closet or against a corridor wall. Ask the supplier for the assembled depth, width and height as separate figures, and check them against the tightest space your retail customer is likely to have — not against the average.

This is where narrow-format items earn their place in a range. A 20cm narrow gap rolling cart (4-tier) is built around a restricted footprint, while a 2-tier pull-out storage rack (5.5cm) works where depth is measured in centimetres rather than tens of centimetres. Confirm the depth figure with the supplier rather than reading it off a photograph.

Tier count and how it is used

Tier count is a merchandising decision as much as a storage one. A tall, many-tier unit suits a household that stores small items vertically; a low, wide unit suits under-bed and under-shelf use. Decide the tier count against the space the end user actually has, and ask the supplier to confirm the assembled height of each tier configuration you plan to list.

Stacking and interlocking

If you intend to sell units that customers combine, ask directly whether the units stack or interlock, and whether the supplier's own components are designed to do so. Two visually similar racks from different tooling will not necessarily lock together, and a range that is advertised as modular but is not will generate returns.

Tube Diameter, Finish, Casters and Assembly

Tube diameter and how it is finished

For tube-based racks, record the tube diameter and the wall thickness the supplier states, and record how the tube is finished — coated, painted or otherwise treated. Finish affects how the product looks and how it resists handling in transit and in the shop. Take the figures from the supplier's specification, not from a marketplace listing.

Caster or wheel type

Wheels are a specification, not an accessory. Ask what type of caster or wheel is fitted, what material it is made of, and whether it is intended for hard flooring or carpet. A cart sold into a market where most homes have tile will be judged on how it rolls and how it sounds. Confirm the wheel type per SKU, because suppliers often offer more than one version of the same frame.

Assembly and tools

Ask whether assembly is required, what tools the end user needs, and whether those tools are included. For a multi-person household buying from a retail shelf, an item that needs a screwdriver and twenty minutes is a different proposition from one that clicks together. Get the answer in writing per model, and check it against the instruction sheet the supplier actually ships.

Load Capacity: Ask for Evidence, Not a Number

This is the point that most often goes wrong in storage sourcing. Load capacity cannot be judged from a tube diameter or a wall-thickness figure printed in a catalogue. A 16mm tube at 0.6mm wall thickness does not, by itself, tell you how many kilograms a shelf will hold, because capacity depends on the whole structure — the joints, the shelf material, the span between supports and how the load is distributed.

The practical consequence for a buyer is simple: do not infer a capacity figure from a diameter. Either have the item tested, or ask the supplier for their own documented test record, and treat a number without a document behind it as unverified. If the supplier cannot produce a record, the honest position is that the capacity is not established — and that is a question to settle before the order, not after the first container.

Packing and Palletisation for the Voyage

Storage products are bulky and light, which makes packing efficiency a direct cost line. Ask the supplier how the item is packed — individual carton, master carton, quantity per carton — and how the cartons are palletised, including pallet dimensions and how many cartons sit on each pallet. For KD (knock-down) items, confirm that the flat-packed form is what is being quoted.

Flat-pack construction changes the arithmetic on a container, so it is worth asking which models in your range are KD. The 3-tier fabric drawer storage (KD style) is one example of a storage item supplied in KD form; ask the supplier for the packed volume of each model you intend to order and compare models on that basis, not on unit price alone.

Our Role: Inspection, Self-Check Records and Limits

On the buyer's request we arrange inspection, we may go to the factory, and we issue our own self-check record — photographs, video and a checklist of what was examined. We do not issue inspection reports, because we are not a third-party inspection body. If you need a formal inspection report, it has to be requested from a third-party agency; you are free to appoint your own inspection company for your order.

Certificates are issued by the partner factories, and we verify the certificates our partner factories provide against the requirements of your target market, such as CE, SABER or NOM. Certificates and test reports are available on request.

Before you commit to travel, you can book a live video call with us to see the goods and the packing on camera — at the Yiwu market, in our warehouse or at a partner factory. The call is by appointment, and you send the list of items you want to see in advance so we can prepare.

We do not provide freight forwarding services: we do not book space, issue transport documents, collect freight charges, handle customs clearance or operate a consolidation warehouse. Transport is arranged by you or by a forwarder you appoint, and freight rates and transit times should be asked of that forwarder. Our role in the logistics chain is limited to preparing export documents on FOB Yiwu terms and working with the forwarder you designate.

A Note on Verifying Suppliers

If you want to check a Chinese supplier's registration and filing information yourself, the State Administration for Market Regulation publishes it through the enterprise credit information publicity system, where you can search by company name or unified social credit code for scale, business scope, administrative licences, annual reports, administrative penalties and abnormal-operation status. Chinese customs also publishes enterprise credit ratings, which are graded as advanced certified enterprise, certified enterprise, general enterprise, dishonest enterprise and seriously dishonest enterprise; advanced certified and certified enterprises are China's Authorised Economic Operators (AEO). Note that the customs publicity scope covers those categories and does not include individual export declaration records.

For commercial disputes, the CCPIT Mediation Center handles foreign-related commercial mediation, and a case can be accepted on the application of one party alone, without both sides applying jointly. Consumer complaint channels under the market regulation system are built around purchases for personal living needs, so purchases made for resale or business purposes may not be accepted through that route.

Settle the Checklist, Then Order

Footprint and depth, tier count, stacking, tube diameter and finish, wheel type, assembly and tools, packing and palletisation — each of these is a question with an answer, and each answer belongs in the order confirmation rather than in a conversation. Add the capacity evidence question on top, and you have a specification you can hold a supplier to.
