How to Buy from China: Complete Sourcing Guide

A step-by-step guide to buying on Taobao, Tmall, JD, Pinduoduo and 1688: apps, Alipay passport verification, consolidation warehouses and customs.

How to Buy from China: A Complete Shopping Guide to Chinese E-Commerce Platforms

This guide covers two situations: (1) you are inside China; (2) you are overseas and want to buy goods on Chinese platforms and have them shipped to you. Key point: most sellers on Chinese platforms only ship to domestic addresses, so if you receive goods overseas you must use a consolidation warehouse (forwarding warehouse).

Section 1: Platform Comparison

| Platform | What it is good for | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | | Taobao | Almost everything: niche parts, battery cells, DIY materials, small goods | The largest selection, many individual sellers, low prices; Chinese-language interface, overseas phone numbers accepted for registration | | Tmall | Branded genuine goods, industrial goods, branded batteries | Corporate stores, more stable after-sales service | | JD | Electronics, branded battery cells, large appliances | Reliable self-operated quality, fast logistics | | Pinduoduo | Low-priced small goods | Plenty of low-cost supply, some sellers do not support after-sales service, registration and payment restrictions are somewhat greater | | 1688 | Bulk procurement, factory battery cells, wholesale | The lowest MOQ, suited to buying industrial goods such as battery cells in batches |

Section 2: Preparation (Most Important)

1. Download the apps

2. Account registration

  1. Open Alipay → My Account → Real-name verification → choose Passport verification.
  2. Upload a clear photo of your passport, enter your name (it must match the passport exactly), and complete face recognition.
  3. Review usually takes a few hours to 24 hours; without passport real-name verification you cannot pay.

3. Payment methods (for foreigners without a Chinese bank card)

> Note: the above are third-party platform rules and may change; please refer to Alipay's official pages.

Section 3: Delivery Address (Two Scenarios)

Scenario A: You are inside China (hotel / apartment)

Fill in a Chinese address directly, with the hotel front desk or landlord's name plus a phone number, and domestic couriers will deliver straight to it.

Scenario B: You are overseas (Singapore, the United States, Europe, etc. — important!)

Section 4: The Complete Ordering Process

  1. Register an account + complete Alipay passport real-name verification, and link a foreign-currency credit card.
  2. Obtain the Chinese address of a consolidation warehouse (overseas users).
  3. Search for products on the platform (image search / translated Chinese keywords) and review product details and seller reviews.
  4. Contact the seller through the platform chat box (with built-in translation) to confirm: stock, specifications, dispatch time, and whether the item can be shipped to a consolidation warehouse; for dangerous goods you must always ask in advance whether they can be sent to a consolidation warehouse and whether they are a transportable category.
  5. Add items to the cart, submit the order, and choose Alipay for payment.
  6. The seller sends the goods by domestic courier to the consolidation warehouse.
  7. The warehouse receives them; you check the parcels, apply for combined packing, declare the product information, and pay the international shipping fee.
  8. International transport and customs clearance, then delivery to your overseas address.
  9. Inspect the goods on receipt; if there is a problem, contact the seller or the consolidation customer service.

Section 5: Key Risks and How to Avoid Pitfalls

Section 6: Alternatives (If You Do Not Want to Bother with Alipay Real-Name Verification)

1. Purchasing agent places the order for you (procurement agent)

Find a reliable domestic procurement agent, send the product link to the agent, and the agent places the order on the domestic platform and ships it to the consolidation warehouse; you pay for the goods + service fee + shipping. Advantages: you do not have to complete Alipay passport real-name verification yourself. Disadvantages: you have to pay a service fee and you need to trust the other party.

2. AliExpress (Alibaba's international site)

The interface is in English, you pay directly in foreign currency, and it ships internationally direct, so no consolidation warehouse is needed. Disadvantages: the product range is smaller than Taobao's, and the price of the same battery cell is generally higher than on Taobao.

Section 7: FAQ

Q: I registered with an overseas phone number but do not receive the verification code. A: In some countries the carrier blocks overseas SMS; register with an email address instead, or use an agent to place the order.

Q: What should I do if payment fails? A: (1) Contact your overseas bank to lift the cross-border block; (2) switch to another Visa/Master; (3) split the order into small amounts to avoid the 3% fee.

Q: Can parcels be inspected at the consolidation warehouse? A: Most consolidators support photo inspection, and when buying battery cells it is strongly recommended to switch it on to check appearance, terminals and packaging.

Q: What cannot be consolidated? A: Flammable and explosive goods, high-power lithium batteries without compliant packaging, liquids, strong magnets and controlled items; the rules differ from one consolidation route to another.
