Sourcing Checklist: Cleaning & Kitchen Tools
A practical checklist for Middle East importers preparing a first order of non-powered cleaning tools and kitchen tools / food-storage containers from China. This is a method piece: every line below is a question to put to the supplier, not a specification we hold. We are a Yiwu-based sourcing agent and export trading company working with a partner-factory network — the confirmable data must come from the supplier, item by item. For buyers from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, entry to China for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits or transit of no more than 30 days is visa-free under the unilateral visa-free policy, and the UAE and Qatar are covered by mutual visa-exemption agreements rather than the unilateral policy. Both of those arrangements carry a validity date of 2026-12-31. Visa-free entry does not require an invitation letter.
Start With the Two Product Groups Separately
Cleaning tools and kitchen items fail for different reasons, so build two separate question lists. For cleaning tools the risk usually sits in joints, handles and refill fit. For kitchen tools and food-storage containers the risk usually sits in food-contact documentation, lid seals and set counting.
Questions on Material and Finish
- What is the body material, and what is the exact finish on the visible surface?
- For metal parts: what coating is used, and how is it applied?
- For plastic parts: is the resin grade stated on the supplier's own document?
- For mops and brooms: what fibre is the head, and how is the fibre fixed to the base?
- For cutlery and utensils: what is the declared food-contact material?
Ask for the answer in writing, per item. A verbal answer on a chat thread is not a document.
Questions on Size Range and Nesting
- What is the full size range offered in this family, and which sizes share tooling?
- Do the items nest or stack for shipping, and by how much does nesting reduce the packed height?
- If a retail display is built from several sizes, do they stand together or fall over?
Nesting is a packing question as much as a product question. Ask the supplier to show the nested configuration on camera.
Questions on Handles, Joints and Locking Construction
- How is the handle fixed to the head — thread, snap, rivet or press fit?
- For telescopic handles: how many locking positions, and what holds the lock?
- For spin mops: what is the joint material, and how is the spin mechanism sealed?
- For buckets and dustpans: what is the wall thickness at the stress point where the handle meets the body?
- For food-storage containers: how does the closure lock, and does it lock on all four sides or two?
Ask the supplier to demonstrate the joint under load on a live video call, not on a still photo. You can book a live video call with us to see goods and packing on camera at the market, at our warehouse or at a partner factory; the call is by appointment and you send the list of items you want to see in advance.
Questions on Lids, Seals and How the Seal Is Tested
- What is the lid material, and what is the seal made of?
- Is the seal a separate gasket, a moulded lip, or a press-fit rim?
- How does the supplier test the seal — leak test, drop test, or a stated internal check?
- For lunch boxes and canisters: is the seal tested with liquid, and for how long?
- Does the seal stay in place when the container is opened and closed repeatedly?
If the supplier cannot describe a test method, treat the seal as unverified.
Questions on Dishwasher and Microwave Suitability
- Does the supplier document dishwasher suitability, and for which parts?
- Does the supplier document microwave suitability, and for which parts?
- Are there parts that must be removed before either?
- Is the documentation a supplier statement or a third-party test report?
If the supplier does not document it, the correct answer for your listing is that it is not confirmed.
Food-Contact Declaration — and Destination Rules
Food-contact compliance is declared by the manufacturer, not by us. In the EU, all food contact materials must comply with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 when placed on the European market, must be manufactured according to Good Manufacturing Practices under Commission Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006, and must meet specific EU legislation on certain materials including plastic and ceramics. In the US, FDA regulates substances that come into contact with food, such as those added to packaging materials, cookware or containers that store food, and the food manufacturer is responsible for marketing safe foods.
So ask: can you provide the food-contact material declaration for this exact item? Where the supplier has no document, the correct answer is NOT CONFIRMED — do not treat it as compliant. For any destination-market requirement that is not covered by the documents above — including whether Arabic labelling is required in your market — the position is NOT CONFIRMED. Do not assume EU or US rules apply to the Middle East.
Questions on Set Composition and How Sets Are Counted
- What exactly is in the set, piece by piece?
- Is a set counted by pieces, by functions, or by finished retail units?
- If a set has a rack or a stand, is that counted as a piece?
- How is a set packed — one retail box, or loose pieces in one carton?
Set counting is where order quantities and invoices disagree. Fix the counting rule before you fix the price. For reference on how a set-based listing is presented, see our Sink Rack 5-Piece Set.
Questions on Packing Format and Carton Marks
- What is the retail packing format — polybag, colour box, or shrink?
- What is the master carton format, and how many retail units per carton?
- What carton marks does the supplier print as standard?
- Can your own marks be printed, and what does the supplier need from you to do it?
- Is the carton marked with item code, quantity and destination?
Questions on Refills and Replacement Heads
This is the commercial question that matters most, so ask it early:
- Are replacement heads or refills available as separate items?
- How are refills packed — loose, in retail packs, or in a display box?
- Can refills carry the same branding as the main item?
- What is the lead time difference between the main item and the refill?
Refills and replacement heads are often what turns a one-off order into repeat orders, because the buyer who already has the handle comes back for the head. Ask the supplier how refills are packed and whether they can ship alongside the main item. For an example of how a refill-friendly cleaning item is presented, see our Electric Cleaning Brush QX-018.
Questions on Carton Compression and Stacked Displays
- How many cartons can be stacked, and does the supplier state a stacking limit?
- What happens to the bottom carton after the stated stack height?
- If the retail display is built from cartons, does the bottom layer hold the display up?
- Is there an inner support, or does the product itself carry the load?
Ask the supplier to photograph a full-height stack, not a single carton.
Commercial Terms and Verification
Our quotations are issued FOB Yiwu, tax excluded. A sample fee is charged and deducted from the order payment once the order is placed. We do not quote commission rates, because commission depends on order size — contact us for a quote. We do not provide freight forwarding: we do not book space, issue transport documents, collect freight, handle customs clearance or operate a consolidation warehouse; you appoint your own forwarder, and freight rates and transit times are questions for that forwarder. Certificates are issued by the partner factory and we verify the certificates our partner factories provide against your target market requirements; certificates and test reports are available on request.
You can also verify a supplier's registration and public records yourself through China's official enterprise information disclosure system, and check a Chinese exporter's customs credit grade — advanced certified enterprises and certified enterprises are China's Authorized Economic Operators. For B2B contract disputes, note that China's 12315 consumer complaint channel is built for consumers purchasing for personal living needs, so resale purchases may fall outside it; commercial mediation through the CCPIT mediation centre accepts a request from one party alone and covers trade, transport and logistics.
A Short Version of the Checklist
Material and finish · size range and nesting · handle and joint construction · lid and seal, and how it is tested · dishwasher and microwave documentation · food-contact material declaration · set composition and counting · packing format and carton marks · refill availability and refill packing · carton compression under a stacked display.
For kitchen and storage items in your range, our own product pages cover storage and organisation — for example the 3-Tier Storage Cart with Handle — but for cleaning tools and kitchen tools we hold no product data, so the answers must come from the supplier, item by item.
Contact us for a quotation, or to arrange a visit in Yiwu; visits are by appointment, and you can start with a live video call before booking flights.
