This page covers where to sleep, how to book, and how to move between the hotel, the market and the airport. It is part of our China sourcing series. If this is your first trip, read the trip preparation checklist first, then come back here for the street-level detail. If you have already done the trip once, skip to the section on booking a ride.
Which part of Yiwu should you stay in?
Stay in Futian, the district around the market, when your days are market days. Stay in Binwang, the city centre, when your evenings matter more than your mornings.
Futian (福田), next to the market:
- Walk to District 1 or District 2 in 5–15 minutes in our experience.
- Rooms run from plain business hotels to international brands. Rates move with the season and with the Canton Fair calendar.
- Food near the market is fast and functional: noodles, rice plates, convenience stores.
- Evenings are quiet. This is a wholesale district, not a nightlife district.
- The market gates, the bank branches and the express courier desks are all inside a ten-minute walk.
Binwang (宾王) and the city centre:
- 6–9 km from the market, 15–25 minutes by car in normal traffic.
- Book a ride-hailing car rather than flagging a taxi: the price is on the screen before you get in. Budget roughly RMB 25–40 (Chinese yuan) each way.
- Restaurants, malls, a large public hospital and pharmacies sit within walking distance.
- Better for a long stay, a family trip, or a buyer who works late and eats late.
- You pay for the distance twice a day, at 8 am and at 5 pm.
A third option is the area around the railway station. It is cheap and connected, and it is 20–30 minutes from the market. Use it for a one-night stop between two cities, not for a buying week.
How do you book a room that is really walkable to the market?
Search by landmark, not by city. Three filters do the work: walking distance to the market, recent photos of the room, and a front desk that is staffed at night.
- Search the platform for "Yiwu International Trade City" or "Futian Market", then sort by distance.
- Open the map and measure the walk yourself. "1 km from the market" often means 1 km from the fence, not from the hall you need.
- Check the check-in time. A 2 pm check-in costs you a morning.
- Check the front desk hours. A 1 am arrival with no desk is a locked door.
- Read the newest reviews for two words: "market" and "taxi". Those two words tell you what the location is really like.
- Ask for the room on the side away from the main road. Wholesale deliveries start before six.
International cards work in the international chains and in most business hotels. Smaller local hotels often take RMB cash, WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Pay in advance on the platform when the card is the only one you carry, and keep the booking confirmation on your phone.
Ask the hotel for its address card in Chinese before you go out. Photograph it. That card is what you show a driver at midnight when your phone is dead.
How do you get from the hotel to the market?
Walk from Futian, book a ride-hailing car from Binwang, and use the bus only after you have walked the route once.
- Walk. 5–15 minutes from Futian. Halls open around 8:30 and fill by 9:30.
- Ride-hailing app (recommended). The price is on the screen before you get in, there is nothing to negotiate, and it works without Chinese: both addresses are typed, not spoken. 15–25 minutes from Binwang.
- Taxi. Also fine, and metered; have the Chinese address ready, since the driver may not read English.
- Bus. Cheap and frequent on the main roads, but stop names are in Chinese and routes change. Ride it after you know the way, not before.
- Hotel shuttle. Some business hotels run a morning drop to the market. Ask at the desk the night before; do not assume it runs.
Traffic has two peaks, 8:00–9:00 and 17:00–18:00. The halls close around 17:00–17:30, and the taxi queue at the main gates is longest in the 30 minutes after closing. Leave ten minutes before the shutters come down, or wait twenty minutes after.
How do you walk the market without losing a day?
Take one district per half-day and walk it in one direction. The market is indoors and connected, and the distances are longer than they look on a phone.
- Five districts, numbered one to five, each with several floors. A floor holds one category, and the same category often runs across several floors.
- Check which building holds your category before you book a hotel.
- One district, one floor, one aisle at a time. A full floor takes 40–90 minutes at a buying pace in our experience.
- Start with the district that matches your product, not with District 1. District 1 is where tours start, not where buying starts.
- Walk one side of the aisle, then the other. Stalls on the same aisle sell related goods, so the second pass goes faster.
- Photograph the stall number and the business card in one frame. A card alone loses the aisle.
- Sit down when a supplier offers tea. Ten minutes at the table beats an hour of walking.
- Carry water, a power bank and small notes. The halls are warm, the floors are hard, and card machines fail.
Electric carts run in some halls, and the service desk can tell you what is running that day. Do not plan a meeting around one. If you are still deciding what to buy, the beginner guide covers how to pick a category before you walk it.
How do you book a ride?
Use a ride-hailing app. The price is on the screen before you get in, and both addresses are typed, not spoken, so it works without Chinese.
- Write the three addresses in Chinese before you leave the hotel: the hotel, the market gate, the warehouse.
- At the airport and the railway station, follow the signs to the ride-hailing pickup point. Ignore anyone inside the hall who asks where you are going.
- Use the app at night too. Hailing a street taxi at 11 pm is a negotiation; an app ride is one price on a screen.
- Check the plate against the app before you get in. If you ride alone at night, send the plate to a friend.
Common fares: airport to Futian around RMB 25–40, railway station to Futian around RMB 25–45. On the app you see the price before you get in.
What is different after dark?
The halls close, the wholesale traffic stops, and Yiwu becomes an ordinary mid-size Chinese city. Sort out dinner, cash and transport before nine.
- Halls close around 17:00–17:30, and staff start pulling shutters 30 minutes earlier.
- Restaurants near the market close early. The ones that stay open late are in Binwang.
- Carry RMB cash for small shops, and for yourself if your phone battery dies — but book the ride early, do not wait until the battery is gone.
- The main public hospitals keep emergency departments open around the clock. Save the Chinese name of the nearest one in your phone before you need it.
- 24-hour pharmacies are marked in Chinese characters. The hotel desk knows the nearest one.
- Keep the hotel's Chinese address card in your pocket, not in the room.
Do-this checklist
- Decide Futian or Binwang from your calendar, not from the room rate.
- Search the booking platform by "Yiwu International Trade City", then sort by distance.
- Measure the walk from the hotel to your hall on the map before you pay.
- Check the check-in time and the front desk hours.
- Ask for a room away from the main road.
- Save the hotel address card in Chinese, on paper and on your phone.
- Write the market gate number and the warehouse address in Chinese too.
- Plan one district per half-day, starting with your own category.
- Photograph stall number and business card together.
- Book rides in the app, at night especially.
- Leave the halls ten minutes before closing, or wait twenty.
- Save the nearest hospital name in Chinese before your first market day.
